Osteopathy related questions - all you need to know before your initial consultation

  • Is osteopathic treatment painful?

    Generally an osteopathic treatment is gentle, rarely causes any discomfort. Any discomfort is generally minimal and can be alleviated with an icepack as guided by your Osteopath. In addition, you will be prescribed exercises to maintain your improvement.

  • What is a consultation?

    A consultation with an Osteopath is your initial appointment where you will discuss any health-related issues and concerns. You in return will find out about the treatment options available to you.

  • How long does an osteopathic appointment take?

    Your intitial consultation is 45 minutes long, and thereafter further sessions are around 30 minutes long. During your consultation your Osteopath will talk in depth of your medical history and will carry out all relevant neurological and orthopaedic tests together with a full structural evaluation, before any treatment. 

  • Will I receive treatment at my initial consultation?

    Once the examination is over, an Osteopath will usually give you your first treatment during this visit. 

  • How many appointments do I need?

    This very much depends on your condition. Usually some changes are noticeable after one or two appointments. Unfortunately, long term and/or chronic conditions can need more treatments. Your Osteopath can discuss this with you.

  • Does an Osteopath need to see my medical history?

    In order to pinpoint your problem, your Osteopath will need to ask you a number of questions related to your condition which you are visiting about. 

  • Can an Osteopath carry out x-rays or MRI scans?

    Osteopaths will assess your condition and may arrange an X-ray, MRI Scan or an Ultrasound - this is to either rule out anything more serious or to assist your Osteopath tailoring the right treatment for you.

  • How do I help myself at home?

    After your treatment and before you leave, you’ll be given and explained some activities, stretching or procedures to be carried out in your own home. You could be advised ice or heat applications, avoiding certain activities or positions, as well as some exercises.

  • How long will I need to wait to be seen by an Osteopath?

    Patients are usually seen within 1 to 2 days of initial contact, and then provided with a complete treatment plan tailored to your specific condition. Sometimes regular treatment is essential to your condition. We will always arrange further treatments around your schedule. 

  • Will I need further investigations or treatments?

    Your Osteopath after treatment may decide you would benefit from some additional investigations ie an X-ray, MRI, ultrasound scan or blood tests. are required. If needed your Osteopath may refer you to another health professional.
