From Start to Finish: What Happens During an Osteopathic Consultation
Have you ever wondered what happens if you were to need to be treated by an osteopath?

Are you thinking of making an appointment with an osteopath? Unsure of what to expect?
The first thing to do before you contact an osteopath is to make sure that they are registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). This is the regulatory body for osteopathy; please be aware that it is against the law for anyone who isn't registered with the GOsC to call themselves an osteopath.
It's easy to check – you can either call 020 7357 6655 or visit the General Osteopathic Council website.
What to expect at your first osteopathic consultation
Your first session will take approximately 45 minutes to an hour. This gives your chosen osteopath enough time to:
- Ask questions about the pain or discomfort you are currently experiencing.
- Ask about your overall health, past medical history and any other medical care you may be receiving.
- Ask about your diet and lifestyle if these may be pertinent to your condition.
- Examine you in order to provide you with an accurate diagnosis. Depending on where the problem area is, you may be required to remove clothing. Please be assured that your privacy will be respected at all times, and a dressing gown or towel will be provided. However, if you are uncomfortable undressing, just speak to your osteopath. You may want to ask a friend or relative to come with you to your first appointment.
- Ask you to stretch and move your body in order to gauge your mobility and posture.
- Assess your joint, ligament, muscle and tissue health.
- Check for any serious conditions that an osteopath cannot treat. If there are any concerns at all during your initial consultation, you will be advised to organise an appointment with your GP or visit a hospital for further tests.
A tailored treatment plan
Osteopathy is a patient-centred, non-invasive system of healthcare that uses a variety of treatment techniques to redress your body's natural balance. Treatment includes:
- Manipulation of the body's spine and joints
- Deep tissue massage
- Articulation of the joints
- Stretching stiff joints
During your initial consultation, your osteopath will explain the results of your physical examination and discuss appropriate treatment. Benefits as well as any risks will be talked about to ensure that you understand what the treatment sessions will entail and how many sessions you may need before you feel a noticeable improvement in your general health.
