Most people take their bodies for granted. Our feet get us from A to B, our hands write and grip, our backs will take the strain when we pick something up. In the same way, we expect our muscles to be flexible and our joints to have a decent range of motion when it comes to any sort of sport, fitness regime or physical activity. 


But what if they’re not?

Let’s take golf as an example. How is it possible that a thinly built teenager might be able to drive the ball further than a strong, stocky man? How is it that a golfer will understand how important ‘timing’ is – making contact with the sweet spot of the golf ball at optimal speed – and yet still struggle to do this consistently? It is because this timing is heavily reliant on the golfer having smooth and co-ordinated joint motion. Simply put, you may know all the moves but it will mean nothing if you have tight muscles and stiff joints.


The more flexible you are, the better you will be able to move and perform. In the same way, a less flexible person pushing their body to the limits will be at a greater risk of injury. It doesn’t matter how strong you are - 


We all have different levels of flexibility but there are things we can do to maximise our range of motion. One of these is to visit an osteopath.

After an initial assessment to gauge your concerns and needs, your osteopath will use a variety of hands-on techniques to enhance your range of motion and increase joint flexibility. Osteopathy doesn’t just treat the affected area; the whole body is taken into account in order to treat related regions that could be impacted or predisposed to the injury. 


Techniques to relieve pain and increase range of motion in joints, tendons and ligaments could include:


  • Massage to relax and release muscles
  • Manipulation and articulation of joints 
  • Stretching stiff joints
  • High velocity thrusts

These techniques will also encourage blood flow.

During your treatment, your osteopath will offer advice on appropriate exercises you can at home, designed to maintain range of motion and increase joint flexibility. If required, they will also suggest strengthening exercises.
